Memorial Day

Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday in May—this year on May 26, 2025—is a solemn U.S. federal holiday honoring military personnel who died in service to the country. Originally called Decoration Day after the Civil War, it began as a time to decorate soldiers’ graves with flowers. Over time, Memorial Day evolved to honor all American service members who made the ultimate sacrifice in any conflict. While many mark the unofficial start of summer with gatherings and barbecues, the true purpose remains national remembrance and gratitude for those who gave their lives for freedom.

See Monday’s schedule above for a list of Memorial Day ceremonies, parades, and tributes taking place here in North Georgia.
